The fact of the matter is, running anything in the volunteering world takes a lot of time and usually very little thanks. But that’s not why we do it. We do it because we want to give something back. Most of us came through youth clubs, Scouts, football teams — whatever it was — and we look back at the leaders who shaped us. They probably never realised the impact they had, but we did, and now we’re just trying to give even half of that back to the next lot coming through.

Today was one of those days that hits you a bit. Watching our Cubs move up is always emotional. You hope they’ve enjoyed their time with you, that they felt safe, included, and had a bit of fun along the way. We’ve seen them come in tiny, shy, sometimes terrified… and then slowly grow into more confident, capable, rounded young people.
And the funny thing is, while we’re busy trying to help them grow, they end up shaping us too.

Every camp, every badge, every meltdown, every proud moment — it all sticks with you. We give our time freely, but what we get back in those little moments are worth more, but getting this as a thank you just makes it feel even more special
